Michael Vatikiotis Author, Journalist and Conflict Moderator was the keynote speaker of FCI 51st Annual Meeting in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. After his speech on Asia at a Crossroads: Managing the challenges to stability in Southeast Asia, he answered to questions from Deepesh Patel, Editor, Trade Finance Global (TFG).
Modern Southeast Asia is one of the fastest growing regions in the world, and is one of the most diverse. We have deepening divisions in religion across Indonesia and Malaysia, we have violent insurgencies still in Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines, and the continued influence of China affects the region.
Vatikiotis has lived in several Southeast Asia countries and can witness evolution there since late 1970s. He explains why in his opinion ASEAN is a strategic highway connecting East and West. Biggest challenges includes diversity of the region and return of geopolitics.
