A receivable has been approved; then a dispute arises. An assignment is challenged. A warranty may have been breached. Fraud is suspected.
What happens to the credit cover? Who bears the loss? What are the respective responsibilities of the Export Factor and Import Factor? And what should happen next?
These are not questions that concern legal teams alone. In international factoring, understanding the legal framework behind a transaction can influence decisions across operations, risk, credit, compliance and business development.
On 24–25 November 2026, the FCI Academy Webinar on Legal will bring these issues into focus through two practical online sessions examining the legal framework governing international factoring and, in particular, the application of the General Rules for International Factoring (GRIF).
From understanding the rules to applying them
Knowing what the GRIF says is one thing. Knowing how to apply it when a transaction becomes complicated is another.
The webinar will bring together experienced practitioners from across the FCI network. Richard Stehl, Chair of the FCI Legal Committee, will set the scene on the legal relationships surrounding international factoring. Yüce Uyanık, author of Understanding the General Rules for International Factoring: A Comprehensive Guide, will lead the main GRIF sessions. Aysen Çetintaş, FCI Education Director, will contribute her practical receivables finance perspective alongside the legal experts.
Together, they will use practical legal case clinics and interactive discussions to examine issues including credit cover, disputes, assignment and reassignment, warranties, allocation of loss, fraud and competing claims.
When an approved receivable becomes disputed
The first half day will focus on credit cover, approval management and disputes.
Participants will examine the relevant GRIF provisions governing credit cover and payment under approval before considering what happens when an approved receivable subsequently becomes disputed.
An FCI Legal Case Clinic will then take participants through a practical scenario from an approved receivable to dispute and payment under approval, connecting the relevant GRIF provisions with the decisions that need to be made in practice.
Defective assignment, warranty breach or fraud?
On the second half day, attention turns to assignment, notice and reassignment, warranties, breaches, due diligence and allocation of loss.
A practical case will pose a particularly important question: is the issue a defective assignment, a warranty breach or fraud?
Participants will then explore how the Export Factor and Import Factor should respond, supported by a further legal case clinic and an opportunity to put questions directly to the experts.
Legal knowledge is not only for lawyers
International factoring transactions involve several functions, and legal issues can quickly become operational, credit or risk issues.
For this reason, the webinar is relevant to professionals working across business development, operations, risk management, legal and litigation, credit underwriting and compliance, as well as external lawyers and legal advisers supporting factoring activities.
For organisations active in international factoring, the programme provides an opportunity not only to strengthen individual expertise, but also to build a more consistent understanding of the legal framework across the teams involved in a transaction.
The question is therefore not only whether your legal team should attend.
It is also: who in your organisation needs to know what to do when the difficult case lands on their desk?
